"Silence of the Oracle"
She knows, but she is not telling. Not yet. The Oracle sits
in a field of fire and rain — her hand lifted, two fingers pressed softly to
her lips in the universal gesture of shhh. Her eyes slide to the side, not at
you, but at something just beyond you. She has seen something in the reeds, in
the future, and her pose is the moment of holding it. It’s not fear. It’s
reverence.
Some truths need silence before they can be spoken .I painted this
in a heavily textured, semi-abstract style — oil thinned and splattered,
layered and lifted, so the portrait emerges as if through bushveld heat-haze or
a summer storm.
The earth tones of burnt ochre, rust, and sienna bleed into sky
blue and white speckles, like rain on red dust. The background is chaos, but
her face is calm, luminous. She is the still point in the storm of knowing. And
then there is the guardian on the left .Hidden in the splatter, half-submerged
in the grass and water, is a large frog.
In many African traditions, the frog
is the oracle’s companion — the keeper of water, of transformation, of voices
that travel between worlds. He is watching with her. He is in on the secret.
Most people don’t see him at first, and then they can’t unsee him — the quiet
second oracle, reminding us that wisdom doesn’t always come in human form.
This
is a painting about the power of withholding. About the sacred pause before the
truth is born.
