"Ulwazi"
Ulwazi — (Zulu & Xhosa): Wisdom / Knowledge Wisdom
doesn't always whisper. Sometimes it shouts.
Ulwazi is not a quiet child. The youngster's
mouth is wide open mid-scream, mid-laugh, mid-song — a burst of pure,
unfiltered life force. Eyes are bright, mischievous, and knowing all at
once. This is the expression of a child who knows something the adults have
forgotten: that knowledge isn't just learned, it's felt. It's loud, it's
joyful, it's unafraid to take up space.
It is not clear if the
youngster is a boy or girl because he / she represents the frequency
and color of all children and the sparkle of our own inner child.
Painted in a vibrant, slightly
surreal style where realism dissolves into energy. The little one is rendered with
luminous, almost iridescent skin — blues, golds, greens — because wisdom is
never one colour.
Around the portrait thoughts become visible: the background melts
into marbled, cellular swirls of rust and turquoise and pink, like the earth
itself is dreaming through her. And anchoring all that wild energy are
necklaces — bold, geometric, deeply symbolic. Each bead and pattern is painted
with precision, representing the ancestral knowledge, the culture, the
community that holds the joungster even he / shouts or laughs out to the world.
She is both
ancient and brand new. The oracle and the child. Ulwazi reminds us that true
wisdom is not old and solemn — it is young, vibrant, and brave enough to open
its mouth wide and be heard.
